How to properly protect your furniture after painting
Do I even need to seal it?
Our chalk paint is naturally durable. However, the surface remains slightly chalky, dusty, and porous after drying – which is exactly what creates the charming, velvety-matte look so many people love.
Without a sealant:
- the surface cannot be wiped clean
- liquids or dirt can penetrate and leave stains
For everyday use – especially on furniture that is used and cleaned – we therefore definitely recommend a suitable sealant.
Clear Varnish – for heavy wear & outdoor areas
Ideal for: kitchen tables, chairs, dressers, cabinets, children's furniture, garden furniture, and outdoor projects
Our Annie Sloan Clear Varnish is:
- Water-based, low-odor, and easy to apply
- Suitable for indoor and outdoor use
- UV-resistant – prevents the paint from fading
- Satin-matte – only slightly alters the matte appearance of the chalk paint
Furniture Wax – for indoors and subtle effects
Ideal for: surfaces with less wear, such as bedside tables, decor, frames, creative surfaces with a patina or antique look, and for lovers of the classic matte chalk finish
The soft wax:
- Protects against dust and moisture
- Leaves a water- and dirt-repellent film
- Is suitable exclusively for indoor use
- Can be mixed with chalk paint to create colored waxes for special effects
What about outdoors?
For outdoor projects, we recommend:
☀️ Using clear varnish as a protective layer
☀️ Or: Leaving the paint unsealed to weather naturally over time – this creates an authentic, sun-tanned patina
Please note: never use clear wax outdoors!
Our conclusion
💡 For high-traffic or weather-exposed surfaces: Clear varnish
💡 For creative, cozy indoor looks: Soft wax
This ensures your piece of furniture stays not only beautiful but also durable!
