Refining Autumn Pumpkins with Decoupage Paper

Autumn time is pumpkin time – and with a little decoupage paper, simple decorative pumpkins turn into little works of art! Whether floral patterns, vintage motifs, or modern designs: this technique adds color and texture to the mix, creating stylish highlights in your autumn decor. Ideal for upcycling fans and anyone who loves to get creative. Alternatively, you can of course simply paint the pumpkins with chalk paint – for a classic look.

    How to achieve the look

    Prepare & apply glue

Thoroughly clean the ornamental gourd and let it dry – this helps the glue adhere better and prevents the paper from bubbling. Cut the desired paper into smaller strips or pieces. This makes it easier to wrap around the round shape of the gourd. Apply decoupage glue to the gourd in sections.

    Place paper

Place the pieces of paper on top and press down gently.

    Seal & smooth

Use a soft brush and a little glue to stroke over the paper to smooth and seal it at the same time. Let it dry well.

    Alternative: Omit pumpkin

    Decorate & arrange

The finished pumpkins are perfect for autumn arrangements – whether on the dining table, the windowsill, or in a basket with dried flowers and leaves. Combine different patterns and sizes for a harmonious overall look. This creates a unique decoration with a wow factor in no time at all!

    Tips & FAQs

We recommend decoupage paper because it is inexpensive and perfect for small projects like ornamental pumpkins. Precisely because the pumpkin is often disposed of after the season, decoupage paper is a practical and creative choice. Alternatively, you can also use rice paper if you want a slightly more robust look.

Yes, the découpage project can be a great craft idea for children, though it requires a little support. Since handling glue and découpage paper requires a bit of dexterity, it is ideal for children from about 6 years old who enjoy being creative. The project is a wonderful opportunity to foster children's creativity and create something unique together!

A découpage pumpkin generally lasts as long as the underlying ornamental pumpkin. Depending on the variety and storage conditions, this can range from a few weeks to several months. If the pumpkin is kept in a dry, cool place, it will often remain beautiful throughout the entire autumn season.

However, since the pumpkin is a natural product, it will eventually begin to shrink or spoil. As soon as this happens, you should dispose of it. For longer durability, you could alternatively use an artificial pumpkin – which will last indefinitely.
