Transforming furniture: Three looks for your furniture – Antique, Industrial, Vintage

Give your furniture individual character! Whether a rustic antique effect, a cool industrial style, or a charming vintage look – you can achieve impressive results with colored waxes. These versatile techniques allow you to change the aesthetic of your pieces and showcase signs of wear in a charming way. Discover how you can create genuine one-of-a-kind pieces with just a few simple steps and the right waxes.

    How to achieve the look

    Painting furniture

Start by painting your piece of furniture with your desired chalk paint. Feel free to move the brush in different directions to create a beautiful texture – this will later enhance the effect of the waxes. Then, let the paint dry completely.

    Seal with clear wax

Once the paint is completely dry, apply a coat of clear wax to the entire surface. Carefully work the wax into the paint with a lint-free cloth or a brush, just like hand cream. Continuously wipe off any excess wax. This layer protects your base coat and serves as a foundation for the colored wax.

    Antique effect with brown wax

Antique effect with brown wax: Work the brown wax directly into the still damp or already dried clear wax. Focus on small sections and distribute it evenly. The brown wax settles into recesses and creates the typical distressed look. Wipe off excess wax immediately with a clean cloth to control the intensity.

Tip:Clear wax acts like an eraser and removes excess dark wax. Simply pick up a small amount of clear wax on a clean cloth and rub it over the area where there is too much dark wax.

    Seal

Ensure that every area of your piece of furniture has been finished by rewaxing it at least once with clear wax using a clean, lint-free cloth. Then, allow the wax to harden. This process can take between 5 and 21 days. During this time, the piece of furniture is still somewhat sensitive. For later cleaning, it is best to use a damp cloth.

    Tips & FAQs

In principle yes, but be careful to avoid an overloaded result. The effects often work best when you choose one main look and use the other waxes only sparingly for subtle accents. Try it out on a small, inconspicuous area before you venture onto the entire surface.

Durability depends on the wear and tear the piece of furniture is subjected to. A well-cured and properly applied wax finish can last for many years. For high-traffic surfaces such as tabletops, it may be advisable to renew the wax layer after a few years if necessary.

The best way to clean waxed surfaces is with a slightly damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid aggressive cleaning agents that could damage the wax. For additional protection and shine, you can polish the furniture regularly with a lint-free cloth or apply a new thin layer of clear wax after a few years.
