    Painting garden furniture

Breathe new life into your garden furniture! Whether it's wood, metal, or plastic: with the right preparation and sealant, your favorite pieces will withstand any weather. In this guide, we show you how to achieve a result that shines all season long using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and the appropriate UV protection.

    How to achieve the look

    Preparation

Store wooden furniture in a dry room for at least 3–5 days before starting the project so that excess moisture can escape.

    Clean

Clean the furniture thoroughly with soapy water and a brush to remove algae, moss, and loose dirt. Allow the material to dry completely.

    Important:

    • Is old paint peeling off? Sand these areas briefly to create a stable base.
    • Is the metal rusty? Use a rust preventative before painting.

Stir the chalk paint well. Apply the first coat. For highly absorbent wood, you can thin the paint with a little water.

Be sure to let the paint dry in the shade. After approx. 2–3 hours, it is ready for the second coat to achieve an even and rich color depth.

Tip:It is better to apply the paint in thin layers so that it does not crack while drying. You can also slightly thin the chalk paint with water for this purpose to make application easier.

    UV-protective sealant

For outdoor use, we do not use wax, but rather Annie Sloan Lacquer with integrated UV protection. Apply the outdoor lacquer in two thin coats to prevent fading from the sun and water penetration.

Tip:Allow the furniture to dry in a protected area for at least 24 hours after lacquering before placing it completely back outside. Please note: The lacquer only reaches its full resistance to rain after approx. 10–14 days.

    Tips & FAQs

Yes! Chalk paint is excellently suited for outdoor use because it is open-pored and allows the wood to "breathe." It is only important to apply a final seal with the special outdoor clear coat to protect the paint from UV radiation and moisture.

Yes. If your metal furniture has rusty spots, you should briefly sand them down and pre-treat them with an anti-rust primer. After that, you can continue working with the chalk paint and clear coat as usual.

Yes, that is possible. If you apply the chalk paint in direct sunlight, it will seal naturally. This look is beautifully organic, but it means that the furniture will develop a patina and weather more quickly. However, for lasting color depth and maximum protection against moisture, we recommend our Annie Sloan lacquer.
