    Painting Ikea furniture without sanding

Would you like to give your Kallax shelf or other Ikea classics an individual look? With Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, you can transform simple furniture into true designer pieces – without any tedious sanding. Whether soft pastels or bold color accents: modern furniture upcycling at plübel is that easy.

    How to achieve the look

    Clean

Thoroughly clean your furniture of dust and grease residue using a degreaser. This is particularly important for smooth Ikea surfaces to ensure the paint adheres perfectly.

    Priming (optional)

If your shelf will be subjected to heavy use (e.g., as a bookshelf), we recommend a thin coat of clear varnish as a primer. For purely decorative pieces, you can start directly with the chalk paint.

Apply the chalk paint in thin layers.

Pro tip:On smooth surfaces, you can achieve a particularly even, almost spray-painted finish using a fine-pored foam roller.

    Tips & FAQs

Yes, absolutely. New furniture often has a production residue on the surface that can impair the adhesion of the paint. A thorough cleaning with soapy water or a degreaser is therefore essential so that your paint job holds perfectly from the start.

Correct! Thanks to the high adhesion of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, you can paint directly onto the clean surface. Tedious sanding is not necessary. Tip: It is best to use a foam roller for applying the paint to achieve an especially even finish on smooth surfaces.

For furniture that is subject to heavy mechanical stress – such as a Kallax shelf – an initial thin coat of clear lacquer serves as an ideal bonding agent. The best part: you can also use the same clear lacquer at the end for the final seal to permanently protect your project.
