    Stenciling correctly

Use stencils to create creative patterns on furniture, walls, and decor. Whether modern or playful – discover the technique of stenciling for your DIY project!

    How to achieve the look

    Prepare

Prepare the surface thoroughly and ensure that it is completely dry. Position the stencil in the desired location and secure it with painter's tape or masking tape to prevent it from slipping.

    Stenciling with a brush

Apply a small amount of Chalk Paint to a clean surface, such as the Annie Sloan MixMat. Use a stencil brush and dab the paint evenly onto the stencil. Be careful not to use too much paint at once – multiple thin layers are better than one thick one. Keep the brush dry to avoid paint bleeding under the stencil. Experiment with the thickness and opacity of the paint for interesting effects!

    Stenciling with a roller

Alternatively to using a brush, you can also stencil with a foam roller. Pick up some chalk paint with the roller and roll it on a clean surface (e.g., on the MixMat or newspaper) to remove excess paint. The less paint on the roller, the clearer your design will be. Roll from left to right as well as from top to bottom over the stencil for even color coverage.

    Tips & FAQs

You can stencil on various surfaces, including wood, MDF, walls, furniture, and even ceramic. Ensure the surface is clean, smooth, and well-prepared to achieve the best results.

To prevent paint from bleeding under the stencil, follow these tips:

    • Use little paint: Use a small amount of paint on the brush or roller. Less is more to prevent bleeding.
    • Dab instead of brush: Use straight dabbing motions from top to bottom instead of brushing the paint on. This ensures the paint is applied evenly without getting under the stencil.
    • Keep it dry: Keep the brush or roller as dry as possible. An overly wet roller or brush increases the risk of paint bleeding under the stencil.
    • Correction: If you see paint bleeding under the stencil, remove the stencil immediately and correct the spots with a brush.

Yes, you can apply multiple stencils on top of each other to create complex designs. However, ensure that the bottom layer is completely dry before applying the next layer to avoid smudging.
