    Dry Brush Technique

Would you like to give your furniture a unique, rustic charm? The dry brush technique with chalk paint creates a beautiful, naturally aged effect. It is not about even coverage, but rather about deliberately letting the underlying layer shine through. This creates a raw, uneven finish that is reminiscent of old farmhouse furniture. Discover how easily you can create this country house look yourself!

    How to achieve the look

    Apply chalk paint

First, apply a generous layer of your chosen chalk paint to your piece of furniture. Move the brush in all directions to create texture and ensure complete coverage. Then, let the surface dry completely.

    Less is more!

Take a clean, dry chalk paint brush. Dip only the tip of the brush into your second color so that the bristles are barely coated and remain separated from each other.

Important: Use only a very small amount of paint. If you have picked up too much paint, simply wipe the brush off on some newspaper or a paper towel.

    The dry brush effect

Now for the exciting part! Apply your second coat of chalk paint to the dry surface using quick, back-and-forth strokes. Start with light pressure using only the tip of the brush. Then, gradually work your way up using more pressure. For additional effects, you can also use vigorous dabbing motions to work the paint into crevices and enhance the distressed look.

Tip: Always pick up only a small amount of paint on your brush rather than dipping it generously into the paint pot. This gives you more control over the effect.

    Seal

Your furniture in the dry-brush look is finished!

Achieve more depth and character with just a few brushstrokes: the dry-brushed second color highlights the edges, textures, and details of your piece of furniture, while the base color remains visible. This creates a lively, handcrafted look that you can make either subtle or high-contrast, depending on your color choice.

    Tips & FAQs

Yes, absolutely! That is actually the intention of the dry-brush technique. The uneven, rough finish is deliberate and makes your piece of furniture look as if it has aged naturally and possesses an authentic vintage character.

The dry-brush technique works excellently on any furniture to which you want to give a rustic or shabby-chic look. The effects are particularly effective on surfaces with depressions, carvings, or raised details, as the paint can settle nicely in those areas.

Yes, that is very important. The first layer must be completely dry for the dry-brush technique to work properly and for the second coat of paint to adhere only where intended, without mixing with the color underneath.
